Back-rank mate chess puzzle
A back-rank mate occurs when a king is trapped behind its own pawns and a rook or queen attacks along the final rank. Recognizing the pattern helps you attack vulnerable kings and avoid the same weakness in your own position.
The forcing sequence
In ChessPuzzler’s Back Rank Rook Mate, White begins with Rd8+. Black is forced to block with Re8, and Rxe8# completes the checkmate.
The important detail is the trapped king. Its own pawn shield removes the flight squares, allowing the rook to decide the game on the back rank.
How to prevent back-rank tactics
Create a flight square when it is safe, keep control of the open rank, and watch for overloaded defenders. Before moving a rook away from defense, check whether an immediate back-rank check becomes possible.
