Mate in one chess puzzles
Mate-in-one puzzles train board vision and checkmate recognition. The goal is not merely to find a check—it is to verify that the defending king has no legal capture, block, or escape square.
How to solve mate-in-one positions
List every legal check, then test the defender’s three possible resources: capturing the checking piece, blocking the line, or moving the king. A move is checkmate only when all three resources fail.
The current ChessPuzzler collection includes Rook Drop Mate and Queen on h2, covering an open-file rook mate and a close-range queen mate against a restricted king.
Example pattern: Rook Drop Mate
White uses the open f-file to finish the game with Rf8#. The rook is protected, the king cannot capture it, and every flight square is controlled.
